A SHORT HISTORY LESSON FROM MR. CANYON
When exploring, it is important to know what it is you are looking for. To the left of me you will notice something that looks a lot like dinosaur tracks. If you are wondering how they got there, you came to the right place! Long ago these HUGE animals roamed the earth looking for plants and other animals to eat. While doing this you see, they had to trample the very sandstone you see in front of you. With each step they sunk into the ground...it must have been muddy that day...with the warm Utah sun, these very tracks were preserved for many years!
In this picture you will see petroglyphs. What's a petroglyph you ask? Petroglyphs are images created by removing part of a rock surfaces by incising, pecking, carving, and abrading. A long time ago Indians used this form of art for communication.
Who is this you ask? Mr. Canyon your famous explorer!
Transportation is critical when searching for things. Parents work just great!
Above me you will see Pictographs. What's a pictograph you ask? It is a symbol representing a concept, object, activity, place or event by illustration. Indians would draw instead of carve to communicate with other Indians. I wonder what they were trying to say?
Here are more pictographs. It's amazing to see all the different eras of these fascinating writings.
Turns out I am famous in this part of the country! They named many archaeological sites after me!
If you look really close you will see another dinosaur track. You can see just how big the claws were on this guy!
The most important lesson from all of this is to protect the very land we have been so blessed to walk on. Please look below for more pictures of my Moab adventure!
